Please see below for a message from PCAV’s friends at One Billion Rising.
This Thursday is One Billion Rising - a massive worldwide campaign to gather at least one billion women and those who love us to call for an end to violence against women and girls. It is an opportunity for us to gather in solidarity as we call to end domestic violence and sexual abuse. It is a chance to dance and play and celebrate the vastness of the human spirit and to empower ourselves and men with the awareness of our fabulous female selves.
In Richmond, One Billion Rising RVA will take place Thursday, February 14th, Valentines Day, from 11-2 at the Richmond Coliseum. All are invited. Admission is free.
From 11-12 we will have a resource fair along with entertainment – dancers, hoopers, musicians, artists, glow spinners, drummers…
From 12-1:15 we will have a more formal program with the following speakers: Carol Adams, Claire Hylton Sheppard, Susan Singer, Mayor Dwight Jones, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Rebiya Kadeer with Christina Feerick of WRIC TV8 as our emcee.
At 1:15 we will drum and dance and celebrate the magnificent glory we embody as women and the joy inherent in being alive!
We hope you will be able to come join this call to end violence against women world wide. We hope you will bring your friends and familymembers. We hope you will send this email to everyone you know to let them know this is happening in 200 countries all over the globe, not only here in Richmond, VA. We are planning on 10,000 people, but that’s a hard number to pull in without the help of everyone possible. My hope is that this email will go viral with your help, and the entire city of Richmond will hear about One Billion Rising before it happens on Thursday! Can you help?!
We’ve been getting some good press the last week or so. If you’re curious, here are links to the articles and interviews that have appeared thus far. Tomorrow at 9 I’ll be on Channel 8 talking about it for about 2 minutes.

If you feel so led, we welcome your donation to help pay for our expenses (they are substantially higher than the $1500 indiegogo goal, so we are keeping the campaign alive even though we’ve met our goal. We have raised $5009 so far and have $2500 more to go. Anything left over will happily be donated to the Action Alliance, our fiscal sponsor, an organization which coordinates all 70+ shelters in Virginia. All donations are tax-deductible.) http://www.indiegogo.com/
If you feel led in another direction, we would love to have your help. We need 60 more volunteers. You can sign up at http://onebillionrisingrva.
But whatever you do, please take a moment on the 14th to feel the incredible energy moving around the globe hour by hour as risings take place all over the planet, all aimed at building love and compassion and the empowerment of women. We hope you can join us. We ask that you tell everyone you know that this is happening, wherever they’re living.
