During the month of April, in honor of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, people across the country come together to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect prevention. PCAV spearheads Child Abuse Prevention Month activities for Virginia annually. The theme adopted for 2013 is, “Insure Their Future: Invest in Children.”
In partnership with the Virginia Department of Social Services, Prevent Child Abuse Virginia implements a Child Abuse Prevention Month campaign that includes an Honorary Chairman, a Proclamation from the Governor, the Child Abuse Prevention Month Packet, and the annual conference. Prevent Child Abuse Virginia is proud to present the elements of the statewide campaign, designed to draw attention to child abuse prevention.
The Prevention Month Packet is a tool for individuals and communities to modify and use to support local child abuse prevention efforts. The information included in the packet will help to improve the safety and well being of children by offering parenting tips and discussing how to bring communities together to prevent the abuse and neglect of Virginia’s children. For your convenience, all materials for the 2013 Prevention Month Packet are available to download below.

Pinwheels for Prevention

Everyone has a role to play in preventing child abuse and supporting families. You can get involved by planting pinwheel gardens in a public place, making your own pinwheels, coloring pinwheels with children, displaying pinwheels at home and work, attending local events, and spreading the word about child abuse prevention.
For more information on pinwheels and on how to order them, please visit the Pinwheels for Prevention page.
PCAV is proud to partner with Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden every year to provide a pinwheel garden along the lake in Lewis Ginter’s Children Garden. The 4,000+ pinwheels planted by community volunteers represent the number of children served by Healthy Families Virginia, a program managed by PCAV.

The Blue Ribbon Campaign
In Virginia, the blue ribbon is also a symbol of the need for everyone to be the best they can be when it comes to the wellbeing of children. The blue ribbon campaign is also a memorial to children who have been touched by abuse and neglect. PCAV’s blue ribbon campaign sends a positive message, through phrases such as “Be a blue ribbon family.” or “Make yours a blue ribbon community.”
